Abstract
In Tarikh-i Bayhaqi (i.e., History of Bayhaqi) the military forces played an important role not only in fighting enemies and carrying out offensive and defensive operations, but also in political and ceremonial affairs. These functions were associated with specific purposes and messages and were carried out through particular rituals and ceremonial practices. Understanding these rituals and their instruments is essential for gaining a better knowledge of the history and culture of Iran during the Ghaznavid period. To achieve this goal, this study examines the ceremonial functions of the army and military affairs in Tarikh-i Bayhaqi. The research uses a descriptive-analytical method based on library sources and note-taking from textual evidence. Although the overall approach is qualitative and inductive, frequency counts and quantitative methods are also employed where required. The findings show that most military ceremonies described in Tarikh-i Bayhaqi are related to the bestowal of robes of honor, the appointment of military officials, and military inspection ceremonies. These events are described in considerable detail throughout the text. The most important military positions mentioned in political and military ceremonies are the royal slave corps and the commanders of the army. In addition, special military instruments and sound-producing devices were used in various court ceremonies. Some of these, such as the angoshtvāneh (finger guard) and the trumpet, served mainly ceremonial rather than military purposes in the text.
