Abstract

Although researchers divide epics into three sub-types, national, historical, and religious, in their common classifications, a review of extensive research by Iranian researchers on epics indicates that religious and historical epics have received less attention than national epics, and the characteristics of these works have either been neglected in Persian literature or have been overshadowed by Shahnameh studies. Therefore, understanding the characteristics of religious or historical epic texts is essential to complete research that leads to a precise assessment of Iranian epic works and their development. Therefore, in this study, the author has tried to briefly examine the course of religious epics in Iranian literature based on the role of cultural discourses, although achieving this comprehensively requires extensive and continuous research. A review of religious epics in Iranian literature indicates that historical narratives and religious documents, along with elements of fantastic literature, played a role in the emergence of these works, and of course, these types of epics were not limited to Islamic culture, although most of them belonged to the Shiite religion. Cultural fusion and multiple identities are very prominent in the text of religious epics, and they well demonstrate the spiritual and moral attachment of Iranians to their national culture, religious beliefs, and mystical teachings.
