Abstract
The sense of revenge and vengeance is a vital principle embedded in all human beings and even in some animals. Although revenge is generally viewed negatively in contemporary societies, it has historically been regarded as a commendable and valued act within specific contexts and national traditions. The tradition of vengeance in Iranian myths and epics possesses a symbolic foundation, reflecting struggles against enemies of religion, cultural values, and the homeland. One of the most significant Iranian epics in which revenge is considered a sacred act is Ayadgar-i Zariran (The Memorial of Zarir). This work emphasizes that, in order to preserve the homeland, religion, sovereignty, national honor, and to punish enemies, blood revenge must be taken. Accordingly, Bastur, the son of Zarir, avenges his father’s death by killing Biderafsh with the assistance of his companions. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method to examine the ritual of revenge in ancient Iran. It first investigates the motivations for vengeance and the methods of revenge-taking in Iranian epics and then analyzes the reflection of this tradition in Ayadgar-i Zariran. The findings demonstrate that the ritual of revenge in Iranian myths and epics was practiced with various personal and social motivations. In the story of Zarir, revenge is primarily social in nature, aimed at retribution and punishing the enemy, and it is most often carried out on the battlefield.
