Abstract

Discourse analysis is an interdisciplinary subject that analyzes, interprets, and explains the coherence of a set of textual and metatextual elements and signs in a multifaceted communication system around a central signifier, usually called ideology. The aim of this research is to analyze and explain the dimensions of Ibn Hussam's Shiite discourse by analyzing the praise poems and odes of Imam Ali (AS). Since Ibn Hussam's discourse has both an ideological and conceptual dimension, a social and behavioral manifestation, and a linguistic dimension, in this research we have used the combination of Norman Fairclough's method and Theon Van Dijk's ideological square model. The extensive production of praise and adoration of Imam Ali (AS), his seclusion from the courts, social conflicts with Takfiris, the design of Shiite ideological themes, and the use of referential linguistic and rhetorical elements in the adoration of Ali (AS) are manifestations of Ibn Hussam's Shiite discourse in a three-dimensional coherence. According to the "ideological square" model, Ibn Hussam explains the strengths of the "own" discourse by emphasizing specific titles and referential adjectives, comparing the personality of Imam Ali with others, and repeating the comparative adjectives and general positive qualities of Imam Ali (AS) and at the same time, using narrative sources, demonizing, cursing, and excommunicating those who deny the wilaya of Ali (AS), he shows the weaknesses of the "other" discourse.
