Content Analysis of Forty Contemporary Ta'ziyeh Plays about Imam Ali (The Case of Gholamali Nadalizadeh’s Poetry)

Abstract
Ta’ziyeh, the most important form of Shi'i ritual drama, reflects the religious beliefs, emotions, and spiritual worldview of the Iranian people through a distinctive theatrical tradition. Although the central focus of Ta'ziyeh is the tragedy of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (PBUH), the historical development of this dramatic form has also incorporated the lives and virtues of the other Imams. Among them, Imam Ali (PBUH) occupies a distinguished position, and the representation of his character has evolved into a rich ritual and dramatic tradition. This study aims to analyze the content of Alavid Ta’ziyeh plays through an examination and classification of forty Ta'ziyeh scripts composed by Nadi Damghani, the Poet Laureate of Ta’ziyeh. The plays are analyzed according to three principal dimensions: theme, historical period, and characterization. Given Nadi’s prominent status among Ta'ziyeh playwrights, the analysis of his works provides valuable insight into the dominant features of this dramatic tradition. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach based on library research and the examination of both printed and manuscript Ta’ziyeh texts. The findings indicate that Imam Ali's portrayal in Nadi's works is predominantly shaped by heroic, religious, and miraculous characteristics, while comparatively less attention is devoted to his ethical, educational, and mystical dimensions. Moreover, the greatest number of plays focuses on the periods of the Prophet's lifetime and Imam Ali’s caliphate, both of which offer greater dramatic potential. In terms of characterization, Imam Ali is presented primarily as the principal protagonist and a heroic agent of action. The study concludes that Alavid Ta'ziyeh reflects the close relationship between Shi'i belief and ritual performance, embodying the devotional community's enduring need to preserve and perpetuate the Alavid ideal through artistic expression.
