Abstract
Ritual-regional literature is a form of narrative representation in which ritual structures, local customs, superstitious beliefs, and ethnic myths are combined with the geographical and cultural environment of a region to create rich layers of meaning. This type of literature does not merely portray geographical and cultural features; by connecting mythical patterns with lived experiences, it also plays an important role in preserving cultural memory and shaping the collective unconscious. This study examines the ritual elements embedded in the regional narrative structure of three fictional works by Sohrab Baraham, a contemporary writer from southern Kerman: Fatherless, The Rain of the Eighteenth Day, and Gholamhossein Yaghi. Using qualitative content analysis and a semiotic approach, the research explores the role of such elements as jinn, the Al spirit, the evil eye, salt, childbirth and death rituals, lunar eclipse ceremonies, omens and bad luck, purification practices, and prayers in the creation of meaning and the formation of the narrative structure. The main question of this study is how local rituals and beliefs in Baraham’s fiction move beyond the level of cultural decoration and become structural elements of the narrative. The findings show that ritual elements in Baraham’s works do not serve merely as decorative features; rather, they function as active narrative structures that influence different levels of the story, including setting, characterization, conflict development, and plot construction. The strong presence of local myths and collective rituals gives these narratives additional anthropological, sociological, and psychological dimensions. Therefore, it can be argued that Baraham’s fictional world is a significant example of contemporary Iranian ritual-regional literature, in which ritual functions not only as a theme but also as a governing narrative logic, creating a space where oral traditions are integrated with modern storytelling.
