Analysis of Epic and Mythological Imagery in the Divan of Khwaju Kermani

Abstract
Imagery is the use of language beyond its ordinary form through rhetorical and literary devices. It elevates speech above everyday expression, creating surprise, wonder, or a particular emotional effect, while also conveying deeper and broader meanings. Because of its brevity, reliance on shared background knowledge, and its ability to create a common context between the writer and the reader, allusion is an effective literary device for producing vivid and striking images. Its multiple layers of meaning make poetry more expressive and allow readers to arrive at different and lasting interpretations. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this study is based on library research and qualitative data analysis. It examines the image-making allusions in the Divan of Khwaju Kermani, analyzing how epic and mythological elements are represented in his allusive imagery, the features and techniques through which they are expressed, and their impact on his poetry. The study assumes that allusion plays an important role in the content and rhetoric of Khwaju’s collection of poetry (Divan). The findings show that, among epic themes, Khwaju most frequently refers to the stories of Rostam, Zal, and Siyavash. In terms of frequency, these image-making allusions rank second only to religious allusions and the stories of the prophets. In addition, Khwaju not only portrays his patrons as superior to epic heroes and blends the characteristics of different figures together, but also connects them with Semitic narratives. In some cases, he combines epic allusions with double meaning or uses them in ways that differ from the original stories, which is one of the distinctive features of his poetic style.
